Massive Glulam Beams Make Possible Twin Covered Pickleball Courts

Featuring 65’+ peak and camber glulam beams, this pickleball open court not only provides a more aesthetically appealing venue than other build options, but also improves sound quality on the courts compared to what steel structures would offer.

Spearheaded by Western Wood Structures, the Black Diamond Pickleball Court presented a unique challenge to create an open-air shelter that would accommodate two courts, allowing residents to enjoy year-round play despite the region’s notorious Northwest rain.

WWS envisioned a structure with 4’ overhangs, which was made possible by the use of dapped Peak and Camber Beams designed to receive the purlins.

The Black Diamond Pickleball Court boasts four Large Peak and Camber Glulam Beams, each playing a crucial role in the structural integrity and visual impact of the shelter.

Manufactured by Zipo in Eugene, Oregon, these beams exemplify precision engineering and superior craftsmanship.

Dimensions of the 2 Larger Beams:

  • Depth: Tapering from 20” on the ends to just over 74” deep in the middle
  • Reinforcement: Secured with 16 lag screws for radial reinforcement.

  • Width: 8-3/4”
  • Depth: Tapering from 11” at the ends to just over 64” deep in the middle
  • Reinforcement: Lag screws utilized for radial reinforcement, ensuring structural stability

 

Results

The wooden structure for the Black Diamond Pickleball Court project was successfully implemented, receiving high praise and satisfaction from the client, who plans to replicate this design in future projects.
